Can a non-profit organization trade and invest commodities?

we are a student group who want to establish ourselves as a non-profit organization that will trade commodities. the profits, (should there be any :/), will be used to fund scholarships and our club. there are a lot of legalities to this and i would like some help. would we be allowed to do this activity?
